Most designers would agree that it's crucial to understand the purpose of navigation. Understanding what a typical visitor is looking for can influence the design itself. But you also need to construct layouts in an easy-to-use fashion that serves a greater purpose.
The process of putting together a good user experience design has always been talked about as a deliverables-based practice where bureaucracy, specification documents, wireframes, mockups and site maps took the center stage. With the popularity of music-based social networks there isn't as much demand for bands to create their own websites. But hosting your own website offers more creative control over content, photos, and merchandise. Any serious band or solo artist should consider launching their own website to provide an official online resource for fans of the music.
In this article I want to cover just a few techniques I've noticed on many band or musician websites. Designs often vary drastically based on the homepage and other important details. However, page content is generally mirrored in a way that visitors become familiar with the interface browsing through different band websites. The goal is to promote your music in a clear, fashionable manner.
I was browsing through websites one day and came across one really interesting feature. Jennifer Perrin has a small blog on her website which uses a fixed top navbar. In the center you'll find a profile avatar photo which displays her full author bio(triggered by hover). This is a really interesting feature and I've set out to replicate the idea using jQuery.
So in this tutorial I want to demonstrate how we can build a very simple HTML5 webpage recreating a full author bio display. The entire bio container is hidden until the user hovers over the avatar photo. Take a peek at my live demo to see what it should look like:
Breadcrumbs, or breadcrumb navigation, is a type of navigation that shows the user's location in a website. They are horizontally arranged text links separated usually by the “greater than” symbol (>) which will show where the user is based in the hierarchy of the site. The term breadcrumbs comes from the tale Hansel and Gretel, where Hansel and Gretel leave a trail of breadcrumbs to find their way back home. Just like the real breadcrumbs that were suppose to help the kids to find their way home, breadcrumbs in web design help the users to find their way around a website.
